Price band and the shortcut a low number buys
Where the price sits against the band this reference trades in, and which part a low number buys.
The reading sequence
4 steps, starting at deal credibility and running to list what the figure leaves out. Evidence on this point is read at E1 or E3, and 1 of the 4 steps carries a condition that ends the assessment outright.
Build a band from three same-reference listings
Establish what this reference normally goes for, using listings that name the same reference, case diameter and movement family, before reading the row's own price.
Evidence: E3 — three live listing pages for the same reference, saved with the price line, the selected variant and the date visible in the same capture
- All three listings name the same reference number, the same case diameter and the same movement family.
- The three prices sit inside a band no wider than a third of the middle figure.
- Two listings match the reference and the third is a neighbouring reference with a different case diameter.
- The prices agree, but two of the three pages reuse one photo set, so the band is one source counted twice.
- No page found anywhere names the reference, and every result returns the same generic title.
- The only pages that name the reference are aggregator pages with no price and no seller attached.
Measure the gap and name the part it buys
Convert the price gap into a specific substitution, so the discount is attached to a component rather than to a feeling about the deal.
Evidence: E3 — the three saved comparables beside the row's own page, with the movement, crystal and case-material lines of each quoted word for word
- The gap to the middle comparable is under a fifth, and the movement, crystal and case-material lines match the comparables.
- Where the row is cheaper, the description states which part differs, for example a mineral crystal in place of a sapphire one.
- A gap of a third to a half with no part named as different, on a description otherwise identical to the comparables.
- The row is cheaper because the bracelet does not ship with it, and that exclusion is stated in the description.
- The row sits below half the middle comparable while claiming the same movement, crystal and case material.
- The text claims a screw-down crown, a sapphire crystal and solid end links at a figure the comparables reach with none of the three.
Ask the seller to name the movement and the case material
Get the two fields a low price usually hides written into the message thread, where they can be quoted later.
Evidence: E1 — one written reply naming the movement family, the case material and the crystal type, sent inside the platform thread before payment
- The seller names a movement family and states whether the case is stainless steel or plated.
- The reply repeats the reference number and the case diameter without having to be asked twice.
- The seller names the movement but answers the case question with a word that covers both, such as alloy or steel-look.
- The answer arrives as a voice note or a photograph of a card rather than as a sentence.
- The seller declines to name the movement and offers to send the watch instead.
- The movement named in the message belongs to a different family from the one printed in the listing text.
List what the figure leaves out
Decide whether the quoted amount covers a wearable watch or a head only, and whether the missing pieces are stated before payment.
Evidence: E3 — the inclusions line of the listing and the seller's written answer about box, spare links and paperwork, read side by side
- The description states whether the box, the spare links and the paperwork are included, and the written answer agrees with it.
- Where the bracelet is excluded, the listing says so in the same paragraph as the price.
- The listing is silent on the box, and the seller confirms only that a watch will arrive in a protective pouch.
- Spare links are included, but the listing does not say how many.
- The description shows a boxed set with a card, and the seller confirms that neither ships.
- The quoted figure covers the head only, and the bracelet appears as a second line after payment.
Why the thresholds sit where they do
The band is built from three comparables rather than one because prices move with batch timing, and one listing can be an outlier either way. The threshold that treats half the middle comparable as fatal comes from the arithmetic of the parts: a sapphire crystal, a screw-down crown and solid end links cannot all be present at that figure, so the claim and the price cannot both be true. Naming the movement in writing converts a suspicion into a quotable line, which is the only form of this evidence that survives into a dispute. Photographs cannot show a movement family, and the difference between a plated case and a steel one is invisible in a listing image once the plating has worn at the lugs, so this point closes on a written field rather than on an image.
Common misreads
2 pairs recorded for this point. Each runs in both directions: 1 finding that looks worse than it is, and 1 that looks better.
- looks like Return actually Pass
A figure well under the comparables from a storefront carrying dated buyer photos of the same reference. Batch timing and the end of a run produce genuine outliers, so a gap on its own is not a finding.
- looks like Pass actually Return
A mid-band figure with a complete-looking description. Movement lines are copied across several references at once, and the middle of the band is the easiest place to hide a substitution.
