Photo provenance: whose unit is in the frame?

CurrentLast checked Deal credibilityElectronics

Whether the photos sent show the unit that will be dispatched, with date and setting evidence.

The reading sequence

4 steps, starting at deal credibility and running to get the unit confirmation in the platform thread. Evidence on this point is read at E1, and 3 of the 4 steps carries a condition that ends the assessment outright.

Step 1

Ask for one photo with a handwritten note in frame

Get an image that only the holder of this unit could take, by naming something that cannot be prepared from a template.

Evidence: E1 — one photo of the device beside a handwritten note carrying the day's date and the last four characters of the serial

Pass
  • The note, the device and the serial marking are all in one frame.
  • The date on the note is the day the message arrived.
  • The handwriting is the same across every photo in the set.
Query
  • The note appears in some photos but not in the ones showing the serial.
  • The note carries a date but no serial characters.
Return
  • The seller sends only the images already visible in the listing.
  • The note is a typed strip or an overlay rather than something written on paper in the scene.
Stop here if: The seller will only send images that already appear in the listing. Nothing in the set is tied to a physical unit, so no later photo can be compared against it and the sequence has no baseline. What to do next.
Step 2

Compare the setting across the whole set

Decide whether every photo was taken in one place at one time, which is what turns a set of images into a record of one unit.

Evidence: E1 — the full set of photos read together rather than one at a time, checked for surface, background and light direction

Pass
  • The same surface, the same background object and the same light direction appear in every photo.
  • Shadow direction is consistent, placing the photos inside a short window of the day.
Query
  • Two photos show different backgrounds while the unit markings stay consistent.
  • One photo is cropped so tightly that no background detail is visible at all.
Return
  • Surface, lighting and background all change between photos that claim to show one unit.
  • A photo in the set matches an image used in a different seller's listing.
Step 3

Get the powered-on screen in the same frame as a label

Tie a working device to a labelled unit in a single image, which is the pairing every later step depends on.

Evidence: E1 — one photo showing the screen powered on with the device's own marking and the packaging label together

Pass
  • The screen, the device marking and the packaging label all appear in one frame.
  • Text on all three is sharp enough to read character by character.
Query
  • The screen and the device marking share a frame while the packaging label sits in a separate photo.
  • The screen is on but shows a home screen rather than an information panel.
Return
  • The device is photographed powered off in every image supplied.
  • The marking area is covered by a hand, a sticker or a case in every photo.
Stop here if: The device is never shown powered on with its marking visible. The record cannot be tied to a working unit, and asking for the serial comparison later has nothing to attach to. What to do next.
Step 4

Get the unit confirmation in the platform thread

Establish in writing, while the wording can still be changed, what the seller states about which unit the photos show.

Evidence: E1 — a written reply in the platform message thread that states the photographed unit is the one that will be sent

Pass
  • The seller states in writing that the photographed unit is the one being sent.
  • The reply arrives in the platform thread rather than in an outside channel.
Query
  • The seller confirms it in a voice note, which cannot be attached to a claim as text.
  • The seller answers by sending more photos instead of a sentence.
Return
  • The seller declines to confirm that the photographed unit is the unit being sent.
  • The seller proposes moving the conversation to an outside channel.
Stop here if: The seller will not put the confirmation in the platform thread. A later claim can only use what the platform itself can see, and this is the last point at which the wording can still be obtained. What to do next.

Why the thresholds sit where they do

Provenance is the first question in this category because every other step reads photographs, and a photograph that cannot be tied to a unit makes every later verdict temporary. The three markers used here are chosen for what a seller cannot prepare in advance: today's date in handwriting, one environment running through the whole set, and a powered-on screen beside a label. Image metadata would be the obvious route and is not usable, because chat applications strip it and re-compress images on the way through; the visible tells above survive that treatment, and a shadow direction does not. The written confirmation sits last because it is the step a seller who is unsure of the unit will avoid, and because the answer to it is useful whether it is yes or no: a refusal recorded in the thread is itself evidence of what was agreed.

Common misreads

2 pairs recorded for this point. Each runs in both directions: 1 finding that looks worse than it is, and 1 that looks better.

0 of 4 steps judged

One row per step. Evidence levels: E1 seller photos before dispatch, E2 your photos after arrival, E3 platform public information, E4 third-party reference only. This covers one judging point; the sequence as a whole is scored on the photo scorecard.
